An accomplished local attorney, assistant public defender, and a former lieutenant in the U.S. Navy's J.A.G. Corps, Hallie is running on a platform of efficiency, community involvement, and uniformity in the administration of justice. Hallie has the strong support of Democracy for Chattanooga and has worked with them on one of the most active grassroots campaigns ever for a judge's race in Hamilton County. JASON POWELL is a progressive candidate running for the state House of Representatives. Jason, a realtor who is active with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, and other community and neighborhood groups in Nashville, is running to bring a "bold new voice" to people in this working-class district. Jason is running because of his "concern for active representation" in the Legislature on a platform of education funding reform, community development, and to address the regressive sales tax on food. CHUCK WOMACK, a doctor and two-term Mayor of Cookeville, is a candidate for the State House of Representatives in District 42. Chuck is the only Mayor in Tennessee who signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement. He is also widely recognized for his role in the incorporation of Millersville, his campaign for State Representative, and his activism in a host of progressive organizations, including the Tennessee Alliance for Progressive and Democracy for Tennessee. AMY BROYLES is running as an Independent write-in candidate for the Knox County Commission, District 2B. While Amy is a longtime political activist with the Knox County Democratic Party and a loyal DFA member, she is running as an Independent write-in candidate against an incumbent who is a key player in a massive legal problem for Knox County's charter and who is defying the wishes of voters who approved a term-limits referendum. This race is making state and national headlines and Amy needs your help to get out her message of reform and accountability in a tough race where she has to get voters to write her in on the ballot. Billy, a veteran who served in both Vietnam and in Iraq's "Operation Desert Storm", is also a longtime officer with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. His message of honesty, integrity, and fairness has won him the support of Democracy for Chattanooga and dozens of other political, civic, community service, and law enforcement groups. Billy's main goal is to make the Sheriff's Department more "people-powered" by reinstating Neighborhood Watch groups, D.A.R.E., and fostering strong new bonds between the Department and citizen groups in the Chattanooga area. MARK HARMON, candidate for Knox County Commission in District 2A, has been a leading voice for progressive values in Knoxville. Mark hosts one of the only liberal talk radio shows in the state, he hosts "Democratic Television" on cable access, he's a well-respected local political columnist, and he's a Professor of Journalism and Media at UT Knoxville. Mark also ran for U.S Congress in Texas back in 1998. One of the main reasons Mark is running is because he is "motivated strongly by the value of opening doors for the next generation". GRACIE PORTER is running for the Metro School Board in one of Nashville's most controversial races in many years. Porter, a former principal who has spent 34 years working in Nashville's public schools, is running against a right-wing opponent who homeschools her children and does not inherently believe in public education. The District 5 race is the opening volley of a coordinated Republican Party attack to politicize Metro Government and "take over" Nashville. Jared, an archaelogist, is the former Chair of Democracy for Rutherford County and one of DFA's most committed leaders in Tennessee. He received the "Dean Dozen" endorsement in 2004 while running for the county Road Board - a race he nearly won against a 20-year incumbent who was a local Republican Party boss. Jared is running primarily to help Rutherford County deal with its explosive growth and to protect the county's schools and green spaces. (or Sam as his friends call him) is running for the state Circuit Court in Judicial District 29, which represents rural West Tennesseans in Dyer and Lake Counties. Charles is a practicing attorney specializing in workers compensation, criminal, and Social Security law. Charles is committed to fairness, accessibility, and "justice for all". He champions the underdog against big corporations and supports drug courts and alternative sentencing.
