"Iraq for Sale" Premiere Packs the House in Music City!

Submitted by Administrator on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 7:49pm.

Nearly 250 people turned out Monday night for the Nashville debut of Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers, Robert Greenwald's new documentary on war profiteering in occupied Iraq. The film examines the extensive documented evidence of fraud and incompetence by private-sector military contracting companies like Halliburton, KBR, and C.A.C.I. - all of whom have clear connections to the Bush Administration and are the beneficiaries of no-bid contracts. Iraq for Sale has begun to generate a renewed call for investigations into waste, fraud, and abuse that have cost American taxpayers billions of dollars and have arguably made our forces in Iraq less safe. Interviews with the contract workers themselves, alongside horrifying personal accounts from those tortured at Abu-Ghraib deliver a damning indictment of these American companies' callousness and incompetence which is driven simply by a profit motive.

Lemonade from Lemons in Knoxville

Submitted by paulwitt on Sun, 07/02/2006 - 8:06pm.

Democracy for Knoxville scheduled a house party showing of the movie Wetback: The Undocumented Documentary, intending to be in concert with the rest of the DFA Film Club project for June. The invitation went out and we had a great response, finally entertaining approximately 28 people from across Knox County.

However, our local source for the DVD ended up not receiving it in time, and a backup plan to have 2 copies mailed from California also fell victim to the phrase "the best laid plans of mice and men...etc." Luckily, we had all our bases covered and were able to spend a goodly portion of the evening hearing from several of the local candidates for county offices.

Submitted by Mark Naccarato on Sun, 05/07/2006 - 2:31am.

At the end of April, Democracy for Tennessee launched a pilot program for a new national initiative of Democracy for America – The DFA Film Club!

The kickoff of the DFA Film Club happened during our “Progressive Pep Rally”, in which DFA chapters across Tennessee held simultaneous house party film screenings of the great documentary film, Street Fight. Thanks to our partnership with Ironweed Films, DFA members, grassroots activists, indie filmmakers, and candidates came together at house parties in Nashville, Knoxville, Covington, Clarksville, Bristol, Oak Ridge, and Memphis to see Marshall Curry’s expose of an inner-city mayoral campaign in Newark, New Jersey. The film chronicles the plight of challenger Cory Booker as he faces off against longtime incumbent and machine politician Sharpe James.
